CRIME PREVENTION RECOMMENDATIONS

Get to know your
neighbors (especially those you can trust)Be aware of local vulnerable
places (attractive homes, businesses)
- Do as many daily outside activities as possible (yard work, sports)
- Never leave outside doors
unlocked or garage doors open when working
outside
- Keep hedges clear of first
story window height
- Install storm doors with locks
(front and rear)
- Install storm windows on all
ground level windows (if practical)
- Install deadbolts on all
outside doors
- Install multiple locks on all
outside doors and windows
- Install locks on inside doors
(house to garage, bedrooms)
- Lock all doors during the day
and night
- Install movement sensitive
light sockets outside (front and rear) or install light sensitive light
sockets (on at night, off at day)
- Use light timers every night
in rooms not normally used to establish a consistent pattern as a way of
confusing potential intruders
- Install a security alarm system
(if practical)
- Dial *69 for the phone number of
the caller who does not respond to
your greeting
- Identify with license number,
all entertainment items (TV, vcr, radio, stereo,
camera, etc.) to prevent theft and/or resale
- Never leave large sums of
money, jewelry or any other valuable items
in your home
- Be watchful of outside
activities (cruising cars, trucks, vans, parked vehicles and people not
normally present)
- Communicate with neighbors on
any suspicious activities
- Require positive
identification from people who come to your door representing an organization
- Report any criminal activities
to police at 911
- When working, have a neighbor
move your trashcans and recycle container
to the backyard
- Play the radio on a timer when
away
- Notify several neighbors when
going away
- Always stop paper and mail
delivery when away from home
- Register bicycles with police
and use locking devices at all times
- Contact the Pa Auto Theft
Prevention Authority at 1-888-777-ATPA for vehicle identification number
application to car windows
- Install a car alarm (if
practical)
- Lock car doors at all times
- Use the "CLUB" or
other security devices when parked
- Never leave keys in the
ignition
- Attend the Crime Watch
meetings held on the second Monday of each month at the Senior Citizens
Center on Portland Street at 7:00pm
- Be an active participant in
the neighborhood crime prevention program by following the above
recommendations
