Fire Chief: Larry Seagrist
The Borough of Mechanicsburg is an independent local government with an elected Mayor and Borough Council. An appointed Borough Manager, who acts as the Chief Administrative Officer, handles daily administrative responsibilities. As appointed “Borough Fire Chief” I serve as the Senior Fire Protection Officer. I respond to alarms of fire, other related emergency incidents, handle most matters concerning fire hazards and coordinate the emergency response/effectiveness of the two volunteer fire companies within the Borough. (Washington Fire Company No. #1 and Citizens Fire & Rescue #2.)
The Borough is approximately 2.5 square miles in area. Our population is between nine and ten thousand residents. We have over 160 fire hydrants within the Borough for our water supply. The Borough is made up of all types of buildings and construction. Fires within the borough have the potential to be severe and can be expected to spread from the building of origin. If we are to limit the chance of major loss, our response must be prompt and our attack very agressive.
At the present time our borough enjoys a Class 3 rating from the Insurance Services Office as applied against the “Fire Suppression Rating Schedule”. This has been acheived with an all-volunteer department! We are also working under the new 2009 International Fire Codes. Always remember, sprinkler systems and smoke detectors save lives!
